Bagram Airfield base in Afghanistan

Rubb Building Systems and Cocoon, Inc. recently collaborated in the design, delivery and installation of a fixed-base maintenance hangar for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Based at the Bagram Airfield base in Afghanistan, the hangar is designed to accommodate a C-130 aircraft and has a clear span width of 174' with a 153' wide by 46' high six-bladed sliding door system.

The hangar will fulfill critical maintenance activities not currently available in Afghanistan and is designed to meet specific aircraft clearance envelope requirements and environmental and other load conditions including: support for suspended equipment, full internal fire protection systems, fuels maintenance systems and supporting utilities. The structure is engineered for full compliance with U.S. building code requirements for full wind, snow and seismic loads. As with all Rubb products, the hangar offers the flexibility to be relocated in standard ISO containers should future needs warrant.

Oklahoma MROTC

The first structure to be installed at the Oklahoma Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Technical Center is a Rubb hangar. The MROTC is a joint venture between Boeing and the developer, Trammell Crow in a Partnership for Readiness to service AWACS aircraft for the United States Air Force.

The hangar is an AVS design 177' (54m) wide by 184' (56m) long with 30' (9.15m) sidewalls. The hangar also features a three (3) part Megadoor® hangar door system.

The MROTC will initially use the new hangar to facilitate upgrades in flight navigation and communications for the Air Force AWACS aircraft. Rubb partnered as a subcontractor with the general contractor, Lippert Bros., Inc. to complete this initial phase of the project which will ultimately utilize 210 acres (85 hectares) and 1.3 million ft² (+/- 121,000 m²) of hangar and shop space.

AirTran Hangar - Atlanta, Georgia, USA

At Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Rubb has recently completed the installation of a large maintenance hangar facility for AirTran Airways.

Rubb, Inc. of Sanford, Maine, USA, was contracted to build the widest relocatable hangar we have manufactured to date, measuring 270ft wide by 210ft long, with sidewalls that consist of concrete tilt up panels 30ft high.

The hangar is able to accommodate two Boeing 717s side by side and allows for full maintenance to be performed on and around the aircraft. The interior peak height reaches over 65ft and the main hangar door, a Norco® System, is 250ft wide by 50ft high.

The hangar frame is made of hot dip galvanized steel covered with 28oz/yd 2 PVC coated fabric with DuPont Tedlar® top finish for additional protection against dirt. Rubb, Inc. had total responsibility for the design, fabrication, delivery and erection of the hangar including the door system.

"It is especially pleasing to have been awarded this contract as Rubb was strongly recommended by one of our existing customers, United Airlines," said Gordon Collins, Rubb Director of Marketing, "Even though the size of the AirTran hangar is the largest to date it took only six months to install when it was completed in April of this year." The integration of the Rubb hangar with a well designed conventional structure shows another feature of Rubb's capability and flexibility.

New Aircraft Hangar In Boston

In 1993, Rubb, Inc. completed the construction of a Boeing 757 line-maintenance hangar for United Airlines at Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. Rubb's fast turnaround kept United maintenance ongoing in Boston and provided a highly effective hangar facility.

Some years later United Airlines approached Rubb about replacing this existing facility with a larger line-maintenance hangar designed to service Boeing 777 size aircraft. This was to become the largest single span structure that Rubb had completed to date with a span of 255 ft. In June of 2000 Rubb was given the notice to proceed with the installation of the project. However, before the installation of the new facility could proceed, the existing hangar and all of its systems was dismantled and stored at Rubb's facility in Sanford, Maine, pending a decision by United Airlines as to where the old hangar would be relocated. In order to keep the period of performing maintenance without a hangar to a minimum, Rubb integrated the beginning of the foundation work for the new hangar with the dismantling of the old hangar. Rubb designed the remainder of the schedule to allow United Airlines use of the new hangar even while the internal systems were being completed by subcontractors. In May 2001, United received its permanent certificate of occupancy for the hangar.

The nearly 69,000 sf hangar measures 255 f t. wide by 270 ft. long and has 30 ft. vertical sidewalls. 850,000 pounds of hot dipped galvanized steel comprised the framework of the new hangar with a white translucent membrane for the roof area. Insulated metal cladding for the walls increases the heating efficiency of the new facility.

The hangar is fully equipped featuring a state-of-the-art overhead high expansion foam fire suppression system, improved radiant heating, aircraft power stations, offices and 64 foot-candle metal halide lighting system. These lights are not necessary during the day time hours as the highly translucent membrane allows nearly 300 foot candles of natural light to reach the floor on sunny days.

Hangar success for Rubb in Scotland

Rubb Buildings UK recently completed construction of a new relocatable service hangar for Scot Airways in Dundee, Scotland. This contract follows similar projects in the UK for Brymon Airways at Bristol and City Flyer at Gatwick.

Measuring 90' (27m) x 100' (30m), the Scot Airways hangar consists of Rubb's standard hot dip galvanized steel frame covered with a flame retardant self-extinguishing high tenacity PVC coated polyester fabric, which has a life expectancy of at least 20 years. Rubb was responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and all mechanical systems relating to the Dundee project.

"We are extremely pleased to have completed the project at Dundee," said Rubb UK Sales Manager Ray Colby. "This is our first commercial aviation contract in Scotland, although we have previously designed and erected hangars for the RAF at Kinloss and Lossiemouth."

"More and more airlines, like Scot Airways, appreciate the fact that Rubb buildings allow for future relocation and extension if required, since the structures can be erected and dismantled so easily."

Scot Airways General Manager, Brian Hetherington commented: "Rubb was responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and all mechanical services relating to the hangar. The project was completed to deadline and the hangar is already proving of great use to our company."
